Walking the Camino Francés Guide

Head through Carrión de los Condes along the Cale Santa Maria into the Plaza del Generalísimo in front of the Iglesia de Santiago. Cross over the Río Carrión on the 16th century bridge and continue on until you pass the Moasterio de San Zoilo on the left.

Keep straight on, crossing the new by-pass road onto a quieter country road which takes you through farmland and across a few streams. After a few kilometres you come to the 12th century ruins of the Franciscan Abadia de Santa Maria de Benivivere on the right. The abbey was well known for its good living, benivivere.

The path heads straight to the Via Aquitana, also known as the Calzada de los Peregrinos, which the Romans once used to transport good to Bordeaux. The road runs straight across the plains passing the Fuente del Hospitalejo and crossing a few streams on the way.

The Calzadilla church tower shold come into view long before you reach the village. Continue on until you reach Calzadilla de la Cueza

Calzadilla

Calzadilla de la Cueza has a fountain at the entrance to the village and is home to the Iglesia de San Martín.

The camino trail runs up the main street of the village.

Head out of the village on the main street and across a bridge and the main road. Here you'll come to a map showing you some optional alternative routes, that is if you don't plan on staying in Ledijos.

Alternative Route

One option is to keep on the main road, another is to take the track that runs parallel to the road past the Monasterio de Santa Maria de las Tiendas.

The path rises slightly before dropping across the road into Ledijos.

You can see some images of Santiago in the Iglesia de Santiago. There is also a bar and shop in the village.

Head out of Ledijos and across the main road to meet up with the recommended route.

Head left along track through a wooded area on the river bank, continue on this track until you reach Terradillos de los Templarios

Iglesia de San Pedro, Terradillos de los Templarios

Terradillos de los Templarios once belonged to the Order of the Knights Templar.

The last Grand Master of the Order was Jacques de Molay who was burnt at the stake in 1314.

The villages Iglesia de San Pedro is built with red brick as there was no local stone available.

It houses an interesting 13th century crucifix.
