The Seville Tapas Fair
During the whole month of February the city of Seville devotes itself to catering for lovers of Tapas by hosting the annual Tapas Fair which provides the perfect opportunity for visitors to sample some authentic Spanish cuisine
The Seville Tapas Fair is one of those occasions when as many as 50 restaurants and bars officially participate in the Festival with many more participating unofficially scattered all over the city, all offering their own individual specialties for people to try.
Andalucía prides itself on being the true home of tapas in Spain and Seville is widely regarded as unique because of the almost endless variety of dish that can be found there.
Although it is not possible to sample all of the food on offer for free at the festival there are plenty of good deals on offer whatever your preference, whether you prefer meat, fish or vegetables.
There are some traditional Spanish dishes on offer, such as those based around ham and cheese, as well as regional specialities like shrimp fritters, dates wrapped in bacon or kidneys and duck in Pedro Jimenez sauce.
Because Seville, which is located near the Guadalquivir river, is quieter in February you can get around the city comfortably, taking your time to explore the area and go into places offering the very best tapas in the world.
We all are familiar with the concept of tapas eating now – small portions of food that enable you to sample a whole variety of differing flavours - but there is still spirited argument about how the tradition actually began.
One theory claims that the tapa is used as a lid to prevent flies from hovering above your drink at the bar. Another possibility is that the tapa was eaten in the fields to help workers get through the day until their main meal in the late afternoon. Whatever the real reason maybe, the most important fact is that tapas have become an important part of Spanish life, especially here in Seville.
It is recommended that you try the tapas where you see lots of local people, you can then be sure of finding excellent food and wine. Two come highly recommended, one is on the other side of the Cathedral on Calle Santo Tomas near the Archivo de Indias. And the other called Cinco Jotas, Calle Castelar in the Arenal district. Both serving delicious tapas.
